Typical Scenarios of Use

• Trace the location of a specified IP address – ‘I’ve never seen that hostname before and I wonder who it is’.

• Trace the movements of a specified PC through your network over the past month – i.e. a suspect device has been found on your network.

• An operator insists that you need to buy more switches because the ones you have are already full. Using the Free Ports report, verify whether or not this is true.

• There’s a large amount of traffic going through one part of your network and you can’t determine why this has increased since last month. Traffic is traced to a particular switch port (possibly using NetWatch). Use the Port History Report to find what the end devices are and if a switch has been installed on that port to place more unauthorised machines on the network.

• Find out what newcomers have appeared on your network in the past month.

• With suitable device and interfaces descriptions in place, should a user report a problem on the "London" network, the network operator only has to type "London" into the Netwhere search field to find all related routers, switches and links to see if the problem is on the network itself.

• One of your routers seems to be preventing access to a part of your network and you are unable to determine the cause. It has only been happening since last Monday. Obtain a router config. from before Monday and after Monday and compare them to see what has changed.
